The working strategy sets out towards improving the maize value chain, as the product represents Ethiopia's leading cereal in terms of production, and highlights its importance to the country's food security status and economic development. The strategy works towards harmonising all the components of the maize sector along the value chain. It highlights the core components of the value chain; research and technology development; access to inputs; on-farm production; post-harvest processing and storage; and trade, marketing and demand sinks. The overall mission of the strategy is to; "Build capacity among, provide comprehensive advisory support to, and technically backstop key stakeholders along the value chain to significantly improve the productivity and competitiveness of the maize industry".
